Family gold records

Gold locker inventory for NRIs: keep INR purchase records while living abroad

You live in Singapore. A parent holds the family jewellery in India. The receipt is in rupees, and the last photograph is somewhere in a family chat.

An inventory can bring those details into one consistent record. Begin with a small set of items that you and your family can identify together.

  • Agree on a name for each piece, using a photograph to avoid confusion.
  • Preserve the original purchase amount and currency.
  • Record documented purity and weight, including where the information came from.
  • Note the date the record was last checked against the physical item.
  • Keep a later converted estimate separate from the original receipt amount.
  • Mark missing details for the next family visit instead of filling them from memory.

Use the same approach whether you live in SGD, USD or MYR. A change in display currency should not erase the original purchase context. Any conversion used for comparison should have a date and source.

During a family call, review three items rather than attempting the entire collection. Ask whether anything has been repaired, exchanged or added since the last check.
