Family gold records

If your jewellery went missing, could you list every bangle?

Try a quiet exercise: without opening the jewellery box, list every bangle you own. Can you distinguish the pair you received at your wedding from the similar pair bought later?

This is a record check you can do before anything goes wrong.

  • Write a separate name for each piece or clearly defined set.
  • Check that the number of pieces is recorded.
  • Match each entry to a clear photograph.
  • Add distinguishing details such as engravings or clasp design.
  • Attach available receipts, certificates or valuations to the correct item.
  • List missing information and choose one gap to resolve today.
  • Ask your insurer what evidence and valuations your specific policy requires.

A photograph, receipt and appraisal have different purposes. None should be presented as an automatic guarantee that a claim will be accepted. GIA explains the distinction between a quality report and a financial appraisal in its appraisal guide.

The goal is a record another person can understand without relying entirely on your memory. Keep it current when a piece is repaired, exchanged or gifted.

Begin with the bangle you would find hardest to describe. Take a clear photo, give it a specific name and gather the supporting documents you already have.
