A beautiful photograph may show how a necklace looks when worn. An inventory photograph has another job: help you identify the exact piece later.
Place one item on a plain surface in soft light, then take these photographs:
- The complete piece, with nothing hidden or cut off.
- The reverse side, including the back of a pendant.
- Every visible hallmark or marking. Move closer and check that the image is readable.
- The clasp or fastening, open and closed where practical.
- Distinctive details, such as engraving, a repaired link or an existing scratch.
- The matching invoice, with the relevant item details in focus.
For earrings, include both pieces in one photograph. For a set of bangles, take a group image and individual images so similar pieces remain distinguishable.
Review each photograph before putting the jewellery away. Can you read the marking? Can you tell this piece apart from another one? Keep the original image; a filter that changes colour can make the record less useful.
Keep receipts and identifying information in your private records. When sharing a sample publicly, use fictional details and remove personal information.
