Choose a Family Naming Note for Jewellery
Relatives may use different names for the same jewellery piece.

Relatives may use different names for the same jewellery piece. One person may describe a pendant by its shape, while another uses a family or regional term. A naming note can help relatives recognize that they are discussing the same item while leaving the main record name clear and consistent.
Choose one short label for the record, then add other familiar names as aliases or notes. If a name is uncertain or varies between relatives, say so plainly instead of declaring one term correct. Avoid using a person’s name as the only identifier when a neutral item label would be easier to follow later.
When reviewing the note with family, ask which words they use and whether those words refer to the full piece or only one part. Record the explanation next to the term so that a later reader understands the difference. This is especially useful when a set includes a pendant, chain or detachable part with its own name.
Keep the language respectful and practical. A family naming note records how people refer to an object; it does not establish who owns it or settle its cultural meaning. If a term has several interpretations, preserve the alternatives and the source of each explanation rather than turning a family conversation into an unsupported fact.
