A Bank Locker Is Not Jewelry Insurance: What Families Should Check

Understand what an Indian bank locker does and does not cover, and organize jewelry records before speaking with your insurer.

A bank locker can be one place to keep jewellery, but renting a locker does not automatically insure its contents. The terms depend on where the locker is, the agreement you signed, and any separate insurance policy. Before assuming that a bank or insurer will reimburse a loss, check the applicable terms directly.

What India’s locker directions say

The Reserve Bank of India’s revised directions, effective from 1 January 2022, say banks must clarify in the locker agreement that they do not keep a record of the contents and are not responsible for insuring those contents. The directions also prohibit banks from offering locker customers insurance for the stored articles.

The directions do set out a bank-liability amount for specified cases. Where a loss is linked to incidents such as fire, theft, burglary, robbery, or building collapse arising from the bank’s shortcomings, negligence, or omission, or to fraud by bank employees, the stated liability is equivalent to 100 times the prevailing annual locker rent. The directions separately say a bank is not liable for loss caused by natural calamities or the customer’s sole negligence. These provisions are specific to India and do not mean every locker loss receives the same payment. Read your bank agreement and the RBI directions for the exact terms.

Rules elsewhere are different. In the United States, FDIC deposit insurance does not cover safe-deposit-box contents; that statement is about deposit insurance and does not settle every question of bank liability or personal insurance. Check your own provider agreement and ask your insurer what cover applies where you live.

Make a record you can review

Keep clear photos of each piece and copies of the receipts, certificates, or appraisals you already have. Note the source and date for details such as karat and weight; leave unknown fields blank instead of guessing. A visible hallmark can be photographed, but an image or personal inventory does not authenticate a piece or replace a professional assessment.

Ask your insurer or broker which records they need for the cover you are considering. Requirements vary by policy and item. An inventory can help you find and explain available details, but it does not create insurance coverage, prove ownership, or guarantee a claim will be accepted.

Store record copies in a place you can access if the locker is unavailable. Keep sensitive access details, such as locker numbers, keys, and access codes, out of public photos and filenames.
